Pesticide License Training and Testing Date

The Board of Pesticides Control and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension will be providing pesticide license training sessions at the University of Maine - Machias on Saturday, March 24th in Room 109 of the Science Building on the UMM Campus.  Training on the core portion will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. and on the blueberry portion from 11a.m. to 12 p.m.  Exams will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.  You must pass both exams in order to obtain a pesticide applicators license.  A private license has no exam fee but the license will cost $15 for three years, if you pass the exams. Commercial license exams cost $10 for each core and category exam and the license fee is $70 for two years.  Please contact Gary Fish at the Board of Pesticide Control, 207-287-7545 or email Gary.Fish@Maine.gov, in advance, if you want to take the commercial exams. You will need to obtain and study the Core and Blueberry manuals before the session.  Manuals may be purchased from the University of Maine Pest Management Office by calling 207-581-3880 or on the web at http://pmo.umext.maine.edu/patrain/prices.htm (private core available free as PDF).  The Core manual is $15 and the Blueberry manual is $8.

Fungicide Use Approved

The EPA has approved the use of Propaconazole (Orbit) and Febuconazole (Indar) for use in blueberries to control Monilina blight or Mummyberry disease.  Be sure to obtain a current label from the company or at the wild blueberry web site listed below.  If you had Indar product that you did not use in 2004 you may use it now provided you obtain an updated label.  The addition of crop oil concentrate has been shown to improve the performance of Febuconazole to control this disease.  See the 2006 trial results included in the Wild Blueberry Fact Sheet No. 219, 2007 Disease Control Guide for Wild Blueberries.  This fact sheet is posted on the wild blueberry web site and a paper copy will be mailed out to all on this newsletter list prior to the spring meetings.

Sincerely,

Dave.
